Protests are the voice of the powerless. The Utah Inland Port is a symbol of the ongoing alienation of marginalized communities. Today’s protest was the inevitable result of communities’ voices not being heard. The police’s brutal response to the protesters, including Disabled people, is a violation of basic human dignity. This excessive use of force maintains the same disturbing problem that led to the protest in the first place.
The people were speaking truth to power, challenging an inland port that will threaten our environment and the safety of our families. Today’s protesters understand that the inland port is a danger to us all. While we recognize that people in the media were wrongfully endangered, it does not justify the excessive force of the police. I am grateful for the protesters bravely raising their voices on behalf of those who could not.
